At 40 years old, Mayson brings a wealth of experience and insights to his current team, the Grande Prairie Pirates. Mayson’s introduction to fastpitch came at the tender age of five. “My first team was the Twins back in 1989,” he recalls with a nostalgic smile. It was a family affair from the beginning, with his parents and two older brothers playing pivotal roles in his early development. “My dad coached me through most of my minor career, and my brothers showed me what was possible in this game. My mum has always been my biggest fan,” he adds, highlighting the supportive environment that fostered his growth.
When asked about the biggest influence on his career, Mayson doesn’t hesitate. “My family, without a doubt. They’ve been my mentors, coaches, and biggest supporters.” This strong family foundation laid the groundwork for his philosophy on the game. “An openness to learning and a desire to continue getting better are essential. This is a game of adjustments, and only those willing to adapt will succeed.”
Mayson believes that the key skills for a fastpitch player extend beyond physical prowess. “Being open to learning and constantly seeking improvement are critical. Fastpitch is a game of adjustments, both physical and mental.” His approach to maintaining and enhancing these skills involves a blend of diligent practice, continuous feedback, and mental conditioning.
Reflecting on his career, Mayson fondly recalls his favorite memory: “Strike three of the 2015 ISC World Championships and the celebration of winning gold in Saskatoon. That moment was pure joy.” Such memories are not just personal triumphs but also milestones that inspire younger players.
Looking ahead to the upcoming tournament, Mayson is excited about the level of competition. “I expect a ton of great competition for the teams and players, and a showcase of great talent for the fans.” His enthusiasm is palpable, and he looks forward to contributing to the high-caliber games that lie ahead.
The sport has given Mayson more than just competitive success. “Fastpitch has provided me with travel opportunities around the world and friendships from places near and far. It’s also been an outlet for competition and many fun, memorable team bonding experiences.” These experiences have enriched his life, both on and off the field.
When asked what advice he would give to young players, Mayson’s response is straightforward: “Play a lot and have fun. It’s those who enjoy what they’re doing who have the drive to put in the work needed to succeed.” His words underscore the importance of passion and enjoyment in achieving success.
